Short answer
Near the place where you will unload it. For most moves, that is the new home. You load the unit once, but you will make several trips to empty it once you are settled.
Think about which end of the move has more trips. A few common cases:
- Moving across town with a gap between leases. Rent near the new place. You will move everything into the unit in one day, then pull it out over a weekend or two.
- Selling a house and staging it. Rent near the old home. You will clear rooms in stages and may bring things back for showings.
- Moving to another city. Rent at the destination if you can. Paying a moving company to deliver to a unit across the country is usually simpler than driving back for your things.
- Not sure yet where you will land. Pick the middle, or the side of town you know you will be on most.
You can search from any address, not just where you are now. Type the new zip code into the finder to see what is within 5 miles of it, and compare that with your current neighborhood.
Units are usually month to month, so if plans change you can move out with a short notice, often about 7 days.
