Short answer
Usually one month. Most self storage rents month to month with no long-term contract. A one-month minimum is standard.
That makes storage flexible, but short stays have a few catches:
- Promo minimums. Some first-month-free deals require a 2 to 3 month stay, and a few charge the free month back if you leave early.
- Move-out notice. Many operators ask for at least seven days' notice. Miss it, or leave after your billing date, and you may pay the full next month.
- One-time fees. An admin fee of $20 to $50 hits harder on a one-month rental than a one-year one.
- Billing dates. Some facilities bill on the 1st of the month and some on your move-in date. Ask which, so a short stay does not overlap two billing cycles.
Need storage for a week or two? A one-month rental is still usually the simplest option. Ask the facility whether rent is prorated if you move out early. Some do, many do not.
Use the finder to compare nearby options, then ask each about the minimum stay on their current promotion.
