Somewhat, but the star rating alone tells you little. In our listings, 84% of storage facilities rate 4.5 stars or higher, so most look great at a glance. The details in the low reviews are where the useful information is.
Storage reviews skew high for a simple reason. Renters often leave a review on move-in day, when the manager was helpful and nothing has gone wrong yet. Problems like leaks, pests or rate hikes show up months later, and fewer people go back to post.
How to read them:
- Check the count. 13% of facilities in our listings have fewer than 20 reviews. A 4.9 from 12 reviews means less than a 4.6 from 600.
- Sort by newest. Management changes. Reviews from the last six months matter most.
- Read the one and two star reviews. Look for repeated themes: break-ins, water, bugs, billing errors, cut locks.
- Be wary of name-drops. Dozens of short five-star reviews naming the same employee often come from a move-in day request.
Fake reviews are now illegal. The FTC's rule banning fake reviews took effect in October 2024, with penalties of up to nearly $52,000 per violation.
Ratings and review counts show on every listing in our finder. You can also filter to 4.5 stars and up, then read the reviews for your top two or three.
