Walk away if you see broken security, signs of pests or water, or a manager who will not give you a clear total price. These are the problems that show up again and again in renter complaints.
On the property:
- A gate that is propped open or does not need a code
- Dark aisles, burned-out lights or cameras that point nowhere useful
- Droppings, dead insects or chewed boxes in hallways
- Water stains on ceilings or floors, or a musty smell
- Units with damaged doors or missing latches
In the office:
- No straight answer on the price after the promo ends
- Pressure to sign today
- A rental agreement you are not allowed to read before paying
- Insurance that is "included" but never shows on the bill
That last one is real. In one widely shared Reddit story, a renter's theft claim was denied because the coverage picked on the lease had never been charged. Other stories in the same roundup involve roaches, rats and a burst pipe that ruined thousands of dollars of gear.
In reviews, look for repeated mentions of break-ins, leaks, surprise rate hikes or locks being cut. One bad review is noise. Five saying the same thing is a pattern. Use the finder to line up a few nearby options so walking away is easy.
