Short answer
It can happen. Gates let tenants come and go during access hours, and people who stay past closing can end up trapped on site with their vehicle. Most facilities have a way out, but you should know it before you need it.
How exits usually work varies by property. Common setups:
- An exit keypad that accepts your code only during access hours
- A sensor that opens the gate for cars leaving, even after hours
- A pedestrian exit door that opens from the inside
- An after-hours phone number posted near the gate
Interior buildings add another layer. Hallway doors and elevators may also stop taking your code at closing time.
To avoid getting stuck:
- Ask on move-in day exactly how to leave after hours.
- Save the facility's after-hours or emergency number in your phone.
- Set an alarm 30 minutes before the gate closes.
- Do not follow another car in or out. Most facilities ban tailgating, and it can confuse the gate system.
If you do get stuck, call the after-hours number first. If there is none, call the non-emergency police line rather than climbing the fence. Call 911 only for a real emergency.
Never pull a roll-up door shut with yourself inside a unit. Many lock from the outside.
