Short answer
Use the gate code from your rental, find your unit number, and open it with your lock or the one the facility left on it. If you rented in person, the office will walk you through it.
Before you go, have these ready:
- Gate code. It comes with your rental confirmation or from the office. Some operators use an app instead. At some facilities, the app can open gates, doors and elevators.
- Unit number and building. Large sites have several buildings. Ask for a map.
- Your lock and key. Online rentals at some chains have a lock waiting at the unit. Otherwise, bring one the facility allows.
- ID, in case the office needs to check it.
When you open the unit, check it before you unload:
- Is it the size you paid for?
- Is it clean and dry, with no stains, smells or droppings?
- Does the door open and latch properly?
- Take a few photos. They help if there is ever a dispute or a claim.
If anything is wrong, go back to the office before you move a single box. Swapping units is easy when it is empty.
