Drive-up is better for heavy items you will load often. Indoor is better for things that need protection from heat, cold and dust. Climate control is not typically offered on drive-up units.
| Drive-up | Indoor | |
|---|---|---|
| Loading | Park at the door | Carts, hallways, sometimes an elevator |
| Climate control | Rare | Common |
| Dust and weather | More exposure when the door is open | Less exposure |
| Best for | Furniture, appliances, tools, a car | Boxes, papers, electronics, clothing |
Pick drive-up if you are moving a full apartment, storing a vehicle, or visiting often with heavy things. Saving the walk down a long hallway with a dresser is worth a lot on moving day.
Pick indoor if you are storing wood furniture, electronics, photos or documents, or if you live somewhere very hot, cold or humid. See our guide on climate-controlled storage for what needs it.
If you choose indoor, check the full route from the loading area to the unit before move-in day, including elevator size. A couch that does not fit the elevator turns a two hour move into a long afternoon.
Most chain facilities near you offer both. Ask for each when you call.
